Just Now Reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman

October 22nd, 2009 No comments

American Gods is about 200,000 words long, and I’m sure there are words that are simply in there ’cause I like them. I know I couldn’t justify each and every one of them.
- Neil Gaiman

americangods-hardAlright.. so I arrived a little late to the Gaiman party. But I’m here now, right?

I just got done reading American Gods and once again I’m blown away by the genius that is Neil Gaiman. Clearly he is a master story-teller. He holds your interest, captivates you, and makes you question what’s real and what isn’t. He brings the touch of magic I once had as a little girl.

So with that in mind… the main character Shadow goes on a very long adventure which crosses many miles and many different deities. And some smarty-pants (whom I truly adore now and would share an ice cream with) created “only the gods are real”which is a comprehensive guide to all the travels Shadow had, the gods he met along the way, as well as speculation to whom “the forgotten god” is.

If you’ve read the book.. check out the site. If you haven’t read the book and have no idea what I’m talking about, go add it to your list.

Learn A Different Language

I feed on good soup, not beautiful language.
- Moliere

languageYou should learn a different language and then in public, make a phone call to the weather guy (are those still around?) and just recite what you know. But make it sound really cool… like you’re talking about something important.
Even if it’s from Lesson 1
“Ingrid lives in Europe. She drives a car. She has a dog. Her favourite food is pizza.”

My suggestion is to learn something that’s not common in your area. That way the chances of someone understanding you are slim.

By reason of weird translation, many such sets of instructions read like poems anyhow.

japanAll your base are belong to us – it starts off so simply, but when you translate it to Japanese, back into English, back into Japanese, back into English, so on and so forth… it comes out “All members of the Foundation

Some others that I had fun with:
I was in Florida, I was wrong, and T – Shirt
I work a long day of training in life
What is interesting is written?
For the women, dancing, or you need to learn to give the impression of the line? The length of this one will impress you!
